Biography of Thomas L. Phelps

Supply Chain Executive and Consultant

Thomas Phelps has helped some of the world's leading companies, as well as middle-market companies, improve their supply chains. His past clients include Hewlett-Packard, Seagate, Custom Building Products, Wallace Computer Services, Compaq, US West, Nissan, and Warner Bros. The work done for these clients has saved millions of dollars in supply chain costs.

Mr. Phelps' domain expertise encompasses both the operational and technical aspects of supply chain management, which enables him to focus on operational improvements and technology improvements simultaneously. Much of this experience was gained while employed as a management consultant with two Big-5 consulting firms known for their thought leadership in supply chain: Andersen Consulting (now known as Accenture), and Ernst & Young Management Consulting (now known as Cap Gemini Ernst & Young).

Logistics Consultant
Provided logistics cost reduction services to clients in the automotive, construction materials and computer hardware industries.

Supply Chain Consultant
Provided supply chain software selection and implementation services to clients in the printing, telecommunications and computer hardware industries.

Sameday Technologies (formerly Shipper.com)
Vice President, Enterprise Systems
Set the strategic direction for the systems applications that ran all the critical business functions of this third-party logistics company. Played key executive role in building the company from start-up to five fulfillment centers, 30 distribution centers, and 280 employees in less than one year. Recruited and led a staff of professionals that implemented and integrated systems applications for financials, order management, purchasing, billing, inventory management, warehouse management, returns, transportation management, and delivery management. Implemented the initial warehouse management system in three weeks, setting a new record for fastest implementation. Implemented SAP Financials in two months.


Compaq Computer Corporation, Corporate Headquarters
i2 Technologies System Implementation
Project lead for implementation of i2 Technologies Transportation Manager and Optimizer software. Led a large project team through conceptual design and pilot configuration. Design included integration to SAP and a warehouse management system, as well as process and organizational change requirements.

Warner/Elektra/Atlantic (an AOL Time Warner Company)
Logistics Cost and Service Optimization
Conducted a logistics evaluation process for the largest record company in the U.S. The project simplified the carrier structure for all WEA distribution centers and produced a $1.6M reduction in annual logistics costs.


Seagate Technology, Customer Service Operations Division
Reverse Logistics Assessment
Analyzed the international reverse logistics operation of the world’s largest manufacturer of computer hard drives. Pinpointed problem areas (which Seagate management had attempted to do, but could not), and developed recommendations for reducing reverse logistics cycle time by more than 50%.


Hewlett-Packard Company, Corporate Headquarters
Transportation Management System Selection
Conducted a formal TMS software package selection, guiding HP to select the best TMS for their business needs. Constructed future state design with estimated savings of $24M per year. Selected to be Project Manager for “the most complex i2 TMS implementation ever attempted.”


US West Telecommunications (now known as Qwest)
Transportation Management System Selection
Evaluated US West’s shipping requirements to determine if it needed a tier-one TMS, or whether a cheaper package would be adequate.

Custom Building Products, Corporate Headquarters
Transportation Cost Reduction
Reduced the number of carriers by 75% for this major supplier to Home Depot and Lowe’s, and produced a 12% reduction in annual transportation costs.

Nissan North America, US Corporate Headquarters
Process Improvement
Guided Nissan personnel through process improvement. Conducted facilitated sessions, analyzed current state processes and problems, conducted visioning sessions, formulated solution recommendations, established metrics and guided future state design.

 

Wallace Computer Services, Corporate Headquarters
Transportation Management Systems Assessment
Developed a business case for utilizing a TMS, including how to make transportation a profit center rather than a cost center, for this fifth largest printer in North America.

Recruited by founder of high-tech start-up to be its “supply chain integration expert”. Additional roles included executive management and strategy, business development, project management and sales.


J.B. Hunt Logistics, World Headquarters
Logistics Manager
Participated in a start-up operation for this largest trucking company in the U.S. The operation provided Dedicated Logistics Management Services to the nation’s largest auto auction companies.

Mazda Motor of America, Corporate Headquarters
Senior Vehicle Logistics Analyst
Evaluated entire U.S. vehicle logistics operation and handled all logistics problems, including systems problems, encountered anywhere in the U.S. Conducted intermodal logistics analysis that revealed savings of $1.3 million in annual transportation costs.

Reduced transportation costs through routing analysis and revision for this fourth-largest LTL carrier.
